about

Headphones highly recommended.

AETHERIAL is a suite of eleven interlaced Guitarchitecture compositions. All the Textures on this album were recorded exclusively with guitars interfaced through a process of recombinant layering. The instruments deployed were a vintage 1978 Analog GR 500 GuitarSynth - 1968 Guild D40 acoustic guitar and integrated signal processing via Eventide H9000.

Additional Technical Notes - Recording Chain:
One of the main technical and compositional concerns involved combining technologies from two discreetly different eras: The vintage GR 500 GuitarSynth and the Eventide H9000. And developing an essential Textural balance from a compositional perspective between the two - each of which contain significant individual Textural voices.

GR 500 GuitarSynth > '84 Fender Princeton Reverb ll Amp w/ Amperex Bugle Boy 12AX7- RCA 6V6GT Black Plate > '84 EVM 12L speaker > AKG C414 B-ULS & Sennheiser MD441 U mics > Millennia HV3 mic pre amps > Apogee Symphony interface at 24 bit 96k. No additional pedals, instruments, devices, or plug-ins were deployed.

Compositional - Process - Structural Notes:
One afternoon while working on this recording I began listening to the Guitar Textures isolated on their own in solo mode. Up until that point the recording contained a wide range of additional dynamic elements including percussion. After listening over a period of time I noticed that the austere Guitar Textures - stripped down - possessed multiple layers of detail that deeply held my interest. The Textures were able to linger - unfolding gradually and minutely - unencumbered without reference to genre. They were no longer pushed along by percussive and other elements that were not core to the Textures themselves. They were revealed. In that context I explored the process of layering individual notes of various sustain lengths across multiple tracks - combining individual phrases into blind chordal clusters. And then sequenced those clusters into a series of multi track permutations - each with slightly different sustain - harmonic and timbral content. The overall Textures were shaped by both the GR500 Guitar and the Eventide H9000 in various degrees. The process is akin to an orchestral section where layered notes have individual hand vibrato and subtle differences in tonal identity. This is an idea that I discussed early on with Lou Reed as we worked on voicing guitars for live performance of the "Berlin" songs. This type of Guitarchitecture process also saw early light within the multiple layered guitarsynths on Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes" - However by removing all extraneous genre elements and allowing the Guitar Textures to stand on their own - Aetherial began to present itself.

"The creators function is to sift the elements... The more art is controlled, limited, worked over, the more it is free."
